Santa Cruz’s Nat Young ran into a buzzsaw and was eliminated in Round 3 of the World Surf League’s Billabong Pro Tahiti in Teahupoʻo, Tahiti, on Saturday.
Young was ousted by Hawaii’s John John Florence — ranked No. 2 on the WSL’s Championship Tour — 18.70 to 15.23 in Round 3 later in the day. Young’s losing score was the higher than any other winner’s score through Heat 8 of Round 3.
Young counted wave scores 6.90 and 8.33 in Round 3 while Florence’s highlight reel heat included a 9.00 and 9.70.
Young overcame a couple early falls in Round 2 to beat Portugal’s Frederico Morais 10.74 to 8.93. He counted wave scores of 6.67, which included a tube ride, and 4.07.
