Ferrous Sulfate Superior Tx for Kids with Iron-Deficiency Anemia (JAMA – MedPage Today

Once daily ferrous sulfate was superior to iron polysaccharide when given to young kids with nutritional iron deficiency anemia, a small trial found.

Researchers writing in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that children ages 9 months to 2 years who were randomized to receive ferrous sulfate drops had a greater increase in hemoglobin levels at 12 weeks, their median serum ferritin level and their mean total iron-binding capacity compared to children who were randomized to receive iron polysaccharide drops. Fewer bouts of diarrhea were reported with the ferrous sulfate group.

The authors concluded that once daily, low-dose ferrous sulfate drops were superior to iron polysaccharide drops for the treatment of nutritional iron deficiency anemia in this population.
